Malaysian Dining at the Malay Restaurant - Flushing - NYC

The restaurant we stumbled upon while walking around in Flushing looking for a place new to eat. This place was on one block full of restaurants and it was small and busy looking. Looked very home style.
We had .....
Steamed Tilapia with Special Sauce

Sauteed bittermelon with eggs and radish
(didn’t expect it to be like a pancake but it was tasty nonetheless)

Sauteed Chicken Gizzard and Liver ( Menu offered heart as well but they were out )
served with cucumber, cilantro and sweet soy / chili that usually comes with Hainan chicken
And of course we had rice made with home made chicken stock

Overall very happy with our food and family atmosphere.

Pho' Grand Vietnamese Weekend Lunch

277 Grand Street
New York, NY 10002
(212) 965-5366

When having Vietnamese food, I always like to order a
No#2 Pho Beef Noodle Soup -
with fresh eye of round, brisket, navel, tendon, etc..
with a squeeze of lemon and handful of fresh basil...
to the very last drop pf pho' ...slurp!

and sometimes -
Beef stew with toast bun
chunks of beef shank, gelatinous tendon that melts in your mouth
and carrots swimming in this rich broth.
so savory

First time trying -
Deep Fried Crab Wanton
first bite was delicious then the richness of the cream was overpowering
so just one bite was fine for me

We like to come here whenever we can. Nice quick service and place seems clean.
Are you hungry yet?

Shanghai Lunch - Shanghai Garden Restaurant

*updated*
Looking for delicious Shanghai cuisine?
This little hole in the wall down in Chinatown is where we like to go sometimes. It is a very small space with booths and connecting tables. It might be a little wait but it's worth it.
The service is good, very nice and attentive.
14A Elizabeth Street
New York, NY 10013
Chinatown 212-964-5640

Chilled Combination Dish :
marinated jelly fish - crunchy and fresh on the palette
boneless pig's trotter - taste like pastrami with gelatinous texture
drunken chicken - a nice pungent wine flavor with a fresh finish....what more can I say?
* this dish can be fun and tasty if you're on the adventurous side and
it's a perfect starter*

Another one of my favorite Shanghai dishes :
Stir Fried Rice Cakes with Shredded Pork, Preserved Vegetables and Bamboo shoots
The nice and chewy rice cakes with the crunchy texture from the bamboo shoots blends nicely with pickled and sweet vegetables. Sounds nice right?

Deep Fried Jumbo Shrimp with Mayo and caramelize walnuts.
They were huge, crunchy to bouncy with each bite.
Succulent shrimp we have here, so good..

Wonton with hot chili and garlic sauce
This was okay....they were too big for my liking and the sauce seem sweet then tangy
but might work for you

Who would like to join us next time?

excuse me..can you speak english?

I don't know how many times I've come across non-asians who like to order in vietnamese. They just automatically assume I'm vietnamese and want to impress their date. Most of the time they are with someone asian who of course always orders in english. I'm like "I'm sorry, what would you like?" The fracking menu is in english, please order in english!

Hunan Deliciousness!

Are you ready for some Heat?! Let's talk Hunan style!
Our friend Max speaks highly of this Restaurant "Hunan House" and his favorite dish, the Braised Fish Head.
Right away I was intrigued. His good friend Roger and family also joined us, which was perfect as he knew exactly what to ordered. And here is his order:

Started with the cold appetizers
Pickle Cabbage with chopped chili

Chilled Marinated Beef Tendon with Tripe.
The tripe was thinly sliced giving it a smooth light texture.
Chilled Conch in chili oil
Deep Fried Little Fish, stir fry with fresh chili and scallion.
( with tail and head crunchy yet tender inside and very tasty)

White Pepper with Chunks of Beef which I believe was preserved.
Thinly Sliced Lamb stir fried with watercress, onion, chili and cumin
lamb and cumin ...yes .. i know....

Little Wok with Pork Intestine simmering away in Chili oil.

Grilled Whole Peppers and Stir Fried Water Spinach Stems
Fried Pumpkin Cakes

And star of the night is the Braised Fish Head. I believe it a Asian Carp
Which I found perfect with freshly chopped chilies, tomatoes and green onion bathing in a tangy broth with a hint of heat.
Quite amazing right? Oh boy one taste and believe me you will be HOOKED!

I was surprised that I was able to handle this amount of heat! The chilled pickled cabbage and a bowl of rice helped.

Leaving with the numbing sensation from the spices was a really nice way to end a cold snowy night.
We'll be back!

something in the food...?

So I've seen many couples who come to eat at my restaurant and just start making out right at the table - and I mean many! Must be the pork belly.
But then I also see many couples break up too. I don't get it. I was discussing this with my fellow waitstaff and I'm like "why would you pick a restaurant to do this?" It is the most awkward place to do this! The entire staff is watching and afraid to walk up to the table. A few times I walked up to the table, drop off the check, and mumble something about thanking them and quickly walk away...lol. So I'm going on and on about how it's just wrong to do this at a restaurant - and then I realize that I just went through the same situation myself - at a restuarant - and I quickly shut my mouth.... hahahaha

Dim Sum Weekend!

Saturday Dim Sum at Jing Fong Restaurant.
Anytime I speak of Dim Sum, I always get this questions " Have you been to Jing Fong , it's the best"
The never ending escalator and massive dining room can be impressive but we were a bit disappointed with dim sum here. Some how they tasted too heavy in a starchy way and the place seems dirty. Don't think we're going to be returning.

Sui Mai wrapped with seaweed. Seaweed flavor was too strong

Pork wrapped in fried soybean sheet

Steam ribs

chicken feet

shrimp rice rolls

steam tripe
